Aleana Egan's art is predominantly intuitive and subjective; she uses simple materials, assembled or barely transformed, to create enigmatic works that have a restrained tone and structure. She groups these pieces into installations that are oddly ambivalent; on the one hand she draws our attention to the way things look, how they settle, sag, curve, or hang; on the other, her forms and shapes act as traces or memories, and as a tentative articulation of shifting responses to remembered places or everyday moments. Gaps and absences are at the heart of what Egan does, and this is what makes her work a little puzzling. Similarly, her frequent literary and historical allusions, which are never explained, are reticent and elliptic. More

The textile paintings in this exhibition were made by Mbuti pygmies of the Ituri rainforest in the Congo. The material, bark cloth, is created by men in the tribe; it is then decorated by women, using a mixture of charcoal and natural pigments. The designs are related to body painting and have traditional symbolic meanings; the textiles themselves are used as garments and objects of trade. More

Áras Éanna
Visitors to the Aran Islands throughout the late nineteenth
and early twentieth century have been astonished by the
manner in which the islanders dressed . The style that evolved
here reflected available local materials and the varying, often
harsh climate on the island.
Now a group of women on Inis Oírr have assembled an
exhibition using old items of clothing and embellished them with
photographs and stories to describe island customs associated
with their traditional dress. More

Taylor Galleries
Taylor Galleries is delighted to present New Paintings, an exhibition of recent work by Charles Tyrrell that opens at the gallery with a private view on Thursday 7 June 2012 and runs until 14 July 2012.
Following on the success of Tyrrell's exhibition of large scale work co-hosted by Solstice Arts Centre, Navan and the Crawford Gallery, Cork in 2011 (a selection of which was exhibited in the RHA later the same year), his new exhibition of paintings at Taylor Galleries sees a drastic shift in scale to more modestly sized work. He has, to some degree, broken away from a painting procedure that was often detached and programmatic to embrace a more intimate painterly approach while still working within an abstract minimalist arena. A focal point of the Arcadia Festival which took place in June, From Bray with Love is a curated exhibition which takes a closer look at Bray's international standing as one of the major holiday destinations in Ireland. With the extension of the railway to Bray in 1854, Bray took off as a popular holiday resort, particularly with day-trippers from Dublin, and became the largest Irish seaside resort at the time. From Bray with Love features photographs documenting Bray's success and travel posters designed to entice tourists to Bray and county Wicklow and highlighting the merit that Bray was given as a holiday resort, with the town standing tall alongside Killarney and Connemara as a must-see place to visit when in Ireland. WORK HEAD is an exhibition and publication of work produced by six recent graduates of the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. This event presents the imperatives and paradoxes of artworks produced by a group of peers. It holistically and stubbornly resists syntax or a proper mediating thematic. Each element embodies a persistent pestilence towards the idea of an exhibition. This manifests in the insistent appearance of any one work beside another, which is inevitably indifferent to it. A vicissitude of positions, strategies, methodologies and indeed ethics are fleshed out in this exhibition - but an economy is produced non-the-less, a base line: a group of peers whose work necessitates many heads.
