Butler Gallery
The Butler Gallery is delighted to present outawack, an exhibition by the USA based Irish artist, Helen O'Leary.
Helen O'Leary is a highly inventive artist who has been exhibiting her work for over twenty years. This is her first exhibition in Ireland since 2006. O'Leary's new work delves into her own history as a painter, with both subject matter and raw material rooted in the ruins and failures of her studio. By taking apart canvases, wooden stretchers, panels and frames she turns the conventions of painting literally inside out. Humorous and enigmatic, these fragments that make a new whole, bare their histories as well-worn objects while at the same time are infused with newfound energy and dynamism. More

In 2010, internationally acclaimed photographer Simon Norfolk began a series of photographs in Afghanistan, which takes its cue from the work of Irish photographer John Burke (c. 1843-1900).
Burke was the first photographer to make pictures in Afghanistan. Virtually unknown today, Burke was a precursor of the contemporary photo-journalist producing work that went beyond reportage. Conceived as a collaborative project with Burke across time, Norfolk's photographs re-imagine or respond to Burke's Afghan war scenes in the context of the contemporary conflict. More

Crawford Art Gallery
The Crawford Art Gallery is pleased to present, for the first time in Ireland, the British/Japanese artist Simon Fujiwara. In collaboration with Tate St Ives, the exhibition will showcase an ongoing installation, The Museum of Incest.
The Museum of Incest is Fujiwara's fictive recreation of the story of mankind's evolution, and the objects are archived and displayed in a museum-like setting. These articles and artifacts mix the personal and the fictitious to create a myth of human origins and explicit sexual archaeology that begins at the first footsteps of man and moves forward to Fujiwara's present family background. Course description:
Artists often struggle to photograph their own work or spend scarce money paying someone else to do it for them. But with some basic guidelines and practice, artists are, for the majority of purposes well able to photograph their own paintings, drawings, etc with the digital compact or SLR camera that they already own. For most of the situations in which you present images of your work whether: submitting proposals, portfolios of work for submission to galleries, websites, catalogues, press releases for magazines and newspapers, this workshop will assist you in a methodical step-by-step process to obtain the best possible results with your digital compact camera or digital SLR. "The Bauhaus had used the gothic cathedral as the image of what the school was meant to be: a place where artisans of every field, whether glassmakers or stonecutters or painters or architects, worked together, anonymously, to serve a purpose higher than themselves."
The Space of Art is a one day symposium exploring art, craft and architecture through themes and ideas present in the work and life of Josef Albers. Albers was a member of the original Bauhaus school in Germany which emphasised the connection between artists, architects and craftspeople. More
