Richly dressed 19th century children gaze out of studio portraits, while images of children making fishing nets in West Cork industrial schools, or learning lace-making in Donegal hang side by side with 20th century boys and girls praying, acting out war games or getting ready for a day at the beach. These are just some of the many photographs in the exhibition Small Lives where captivating views of Irish childhood between 1880 and 1970 juxtapose children's lives with the broad sweep of Irish social and political history. Gallery of Photography
To celebrate Chinese New Year 2012, the Gallery of Photography is presenting the Irish premiere of The Opera, Varvara Shavrova's spellbinding work on traditional Peking Opera.
The work focuses on the transformation from male to female, and from female to male, of the Peking Opera artists. Balancing moments of pure visuality with behind the scenes footage, the video underscores the striking avantgardist qualities of this most traditional of artforms.
The Opera is accompanied by a specially commissioned score by composer Benoit Granier, which incorporates elements of traditional Chinese and contemporary electronic music.
The Opera is complemented by related works in other media. More

MIKALA DWYER
'An exploded and bewitched house with a floating roof' - this is how Australian artist Mikala Dwyer describes her solo exhibition, an exhibition that marks the first time her work will be shown in Ireland.
Dwyer ascribes deep symbolic meaning to the objects and artifacts she works with, evoking them as spiritual signifiers and using them to herald a community. A significant Australasian artist, Dwyer's art work is increasingly relevant to a younger generation of artists who have emerged in Dublin in recent years. The installation will include a variation on one of her most recognizable and personal circle accumulations of sculptures, as well as an actual floating ceiling. More
