Cobh Carillon Bell Recitals

5th May 2013 - 29th Sep 2013

The 49-bell Carillon of St Colman's Cathedral in Cobh is the only such instrument in the Republic and the largest in Ireland and Britain.   The action is completely mechanical and there is no artificial assist.   2013 is the 86th year of the Cobh Summer Carillon Recitals, making this one of the longest running annual musical events in the region.   Full programme details are available at the Cathedral at time of recitals.   There is no admission charge.   Recitals take place throughout the year but especially on most Sunday afternoons from 4.30 to 5.30 from May to September and are usually presented by the Cathedral Carillonneur, Adrian Gebruers, with occasional guest recitals by visiting performers from at home and abroad, which this year will include -

*Sunday July 7: Treasa Edmonds (Ireland)
UCC graduate, first recipient of the Staf Gebruers Memorial Award, currently pursuing further studies at the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen (Belgium).

*Sunday July 14: Pascaline Flamme (Belgium)

City Carillonneur of Tournai (Belgium).

*Sunday July 21: John Ridgeway-Wood (England)
Principal Carillonneur of the new Carillon of York Minster (England).

*Sunday August 4: Anne Kroeze (The Netherlands)
Prize-winning Carillonneur of Emmeloord, Leeuwarden and Epe (The Netherlands).

*Sunday September 15: Treasa Edmonds (Ireland)
UCC graduate, first recipient of the Staf Gebruers Memorial Award, currently pursuing further studies at the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen (Belgium).

The recital on Sunday August 25 will mark National Heritage Week.

A closed-circuit system is in operation showing the carillonneur playing the instrument.   This can be viewed inside the Cathedral at the base of the tower – turn right as you enter through the main door.   However the Carillon is best heard from outside.

A compact disc of the Carillon of St Colman’s Cathedral is now available. This was produced in collaboration with University College Cork.

Presented by the Cobh Carillon Committee and grant aided by the Arts Council, the Cork County Council and the Cobh Town Council.
