Hunting Stolen Books

This is an exhibition about some of the 1,185 books stolen from Marsh’s Library in the centuries since it first opened in 1707.  It is based on surviving, hand-written stock-checks taken between 1766 to 1840.
If ‘Hunting Stolen Books’ were to focus on lost items, the display cases would be empty. Instead, we celebrate the small number of books which were found and returned, and those which were replaced by purchase.
Taken together, these books give a sense of what people stole to read, or to sell on the second-hand market.
